Course Description and Goals: This course is the first course of the two-semester-practicum. Along with Practice Teaching 2 course, next term, they provide the main link between theoretical aspects of ELT teaching and the actual practice. This process provides a meaningful context in which the students can experience language education practices which will be needed in the future when they themselves become EFL teachers. Through the weekly tasks and assignments, the candidate teachers will be able to use their theoretical knowledge and apply it in the learning environment.

By the end of this course, students will be able to

  • compare and contrast their theoretical knowledge with the experience they gain throughout the course
  • design and implement teaching tasks that are addressed to certain learner profile, teacher needs, and learning environment
  • analyze their previous teaching knowledge and skills via tasks and activities to develop a professional view of the ELT field
  • design effective lesson plans and develops activities that will help EFL teachers implement technology into their own classrooms by analyzing the needs of the learners.

Design of the Course: All the activities you will engage, participate in, and design each week during the lesson are designed in line with the above aims and goals. The courses will be conducted once a week. Please note that all the participants are required to attend the lessons in order to fulfill the course requirements. All the tasks and course materials will be uploaded to ESUZEM. The participants are required to the same. All the participants are required to store the tasks, assignments, and activities that they complete for this course in a secure drive. Make sure that the files that you submit for evaluation are the exact same ones that you store for yourself. This is a precaution for data loss situations. Please note that this document may be subject to change in accordance with academic calendar, further notifications and arrangements. Please see the related announcement for your practicum school arrangements.

Course Policies:

  • School Attendance: Throughout the term, you are required to attend the schools for 12 weeks, 6 hours a week. Starting from week 3, you will start teaching lessons which adds up to 10 weeks of teaching. Missing any class in practice schools will result in failing the course. You need to schedule make-up sessions if you should miss one. All the tasks are obligatory and must be completed.
  • Participation. In-class participation is important, please do not hesitate to communicate your opinion about the topics of discussion and ask questions about unclear points. Asking relevant questions and making insightful comments show that you care about the class and take responsibility for your own learning.
  • Academic Integrity/ Plagiarism: Plagiarism, using someone else’s ideas and work without giving them any kind of credit, is stealing, and is strictly forbidden. All your work must be original. You can refer to other sources, get inspired by the work of others, but all the statements in your own work must be of your own. Plagiarism will result in the failure of the course.
  • Rules & Regulations. You need to follow the rules and regulations regarding the dress code for public servants and hence the teachers. You need to display professional manners towards the pupils, your mentor teachers, the school administrators, and your supervisors. Punctuality is important for this course, please pay attention to the schools’ lesson hours and do not be late to your classes.
  • Professional Ethics. Please note that you are no longer “presenting” demos in your classes. We consider you as teachers, so please follow the professional ethics. You need to submit well-designed, proper lesson plans weekly and be prompt for assessed teaching tasks.

  • Throughout the term, you will be observed by your supervisors at least twice. You are required to provide a lesson plan for each lesson you teach. Since these observations will be unannounced, you are responsible for making all the necessary preparations for each week. Please note that no lesson plan will be evaluated without teaching and no teaching will be evaluated without a lesson plan.
  • All lesson plans must include an emergency task. This task should be designed as a back-up activity.
  • “Assessed teaching” will last for a whole lesson, first observe the class, then identify the topic and language focus of the lesson, and then prepare your lesson plan based on the theme and language focus of the observed lesson. While planning, please make sure to collaborate with your mentor and pair for lesson consistency and coherence.
  • Observation tasks should be completed on weekly basis. Please also note that the tasks should be printed out and completed by-hand. There is no set order of observation tasks, however; each task should be scanned and uploaded to the related section on ESUZEM on weekly basis.
  • Creative task will be announced during the term. It will be a task consisting of several steps and requiring you to integrate your theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
  • Please do not contact your mentor teachers after 5:00 pm, unless your mentor contacts you.
  • Please do not forget to create a portfolio for yourself to record and document the assignments that you complete for this course. You will be asked to submit it at the end of the course.

Wish you all a very fruitful semester and good luck.
